Described as the longest running conflict of South Asia it has claimed the lives of more than 80,000. Many more have suffered injuries, lost their properties and driven out from their homes and villages. Within the first 5 months of 2009 alone, more than 20,000 Tamil civilians have perished at the final stage of the latest conventional war in Vanni. Thousands have been maimed. Over 300,000 civilians, all of the civilians of Vanni, became internally displaced persons, each family displacing several times within the Tamil terrotirory of Vanni.
All this suffering, caused in the name of war against terrorism, is because they are Tamils who did not surrender their cause.
